Live Grid MVP

The electricity network of Great Britain is transitioning toward Smart Grid status through the modernisation of control and observation methods. Increasing renewable and low carbon generation is being connected to largely passive distribution networks, over which the System Operator has limited visibility. Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) technology improves visibility by providing high-resolution phasor measurements of current and voltage. Additionally, the frequency and Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) can be obtained from the phasor measurements. Two PMUs have been installed onto the electrical networks at the University of Strathclyde and the Power Networks Demonstration Centre for the purpose of this project. Currently, no GB-focused online monitoring platforms display PMU data, whereas the Live Grid Monitoring and Visualisation Platform (LGMVP) has been developed to display PMU data alongside operational network data in real-time. PMU data is not readily available in the public domain, so this source benefits future academic research, network operators and other interested parties.
